Fresh 48 vs. Lifestyle Newborn Sessions: Which is Right for Your Family?

As you prepare to welcome your new addition, you’ll likely hear a lot of different terms for newborn photography. Two of the most common but most misunderstood are Fresh 48 and Lifestyle Newborn sessions.

While both are beautiful ways to document your baby’s first days, they offer very different experiences. My goal is always to help you choose the session that allows you to be the most present and relaxed.

What is a Fresh 48 Session?

Most moms in the Texas Panhandle aren't familiar with this term, but you may have heard it called a "Hospital Session" or a "Birthing Space Session."

Unlike a Birth Photography session (which documents the labor and delivery), a Fresh 48 happens within the first two days of your baby’s life. It is purely documentary-style. I come to your birthing space, whether that is Northwest Texas Healthcare, BSA, or a local birthing center, to capture the raw, quiet magic of those first 48 hours.

  • Hands-Off & Authentic: I don't pose or touch the baby during these sessions. My role is to document the elements of your space: the hospital bassinet, the tiny ID bracelets, and the way your baby looks in that first blanket.

  • Focus on Connection: These 45-minute sessions are about the family bond. It’s about the first time a sibling meets their new best friend, or the quiet way you look at your baby in the middle of the night.

  • Low Pressure: There is no need for hair and makeup or perfect outfits. The beauty of a Fresh 48 is in the honesty of the moment.

What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

A Lifestyle Newborn session is a bit different. This is a baby-led session that usually takes place within the first few weeks of life. While it involves minimal "posing," I provide plenty of gentle guidance and direction to ensure you look and feel your best.

  • Your Space or Mine: These are typically held in the comfort of your own home here in Amarillo, but we can also utilize the "homey" lifestyle set in my Downtown Amarillo Studio. (That blog is coming out soon)

  • The Full Story: These sessions include mom, dad, and siblings at no extra charge. We focus on the "new normal"—cuddles on the big bed, rocking in the nursery, and those tiny details that make your home yours.

  • Baby-Led: Just like my other work, we move at your baby's pace. If they need to be nursed, fed, or changed, we stop. There is never any rush.

Which Session is Right for You?

Choosing between the two is a personal decision, but here is my perspective as a motherhood photographer:

Second-time moms already know how quickly those first few days blur together. They often choose a Fresh 48 to remember the "haze" before they go home.

First-time moms, take my word for it: the first month goes by faster than you can imagine. Before you know it, your baby will be two months old, and those "brand new" features will have changed.

If you can’t decide, you can actually add a Fresh 48 session onto a Maternity or Lifestyle Newborn package to ensure the entire story is told.
