Phone Snaps or Professional Portraits? Finding the Balance in the Amarillo Panhandle

I recently shared a blog about hiking the Lighthouse Trail with my daughter, Mariea. It was a beautiful, raw day of connection, but if you saw my photos from that trip, you might notice something: they were all taken on my phone.

As a professional photographer, people often expect me to have my "big camera" around my neck 24/7. But the truth is, when I am having a laid-back day with my daughter, I don’t want to carry an extra 20 pounds of gear. I don't want to think about "work." I just want to be present.

So, how do you decide when to use your phone and when it’s time to hire a professional? Here is my personal rule of thumb.

When the Phone is Perfect

Your phone camera is a wonderful tool for the "in-between" moments. It is perfect for:

  • Documenting a spontaneous hike in Palo Duro Canyon.

  • Capturing the messy, everyday joy of a Saturday morning at home.

  • Keeping a digital diary of memories that are meant for your eyes only.

The goal in these moments is to be a participant in your life, not just the person documenting it.

When to Hire a Professional

While phone cameras have come a long way, there is a distinct difference between a "snap" and a well-crafted piece of art. You should consider booking a session when:

  • You want to be in the frame. As moms, we are usually the ones taking the pictures, which means we are rarely in them. You deserve to be part of the story too.

  • The light matters. In my downtown Amarillo studio, I use professional flash to create a fine art look that a phone simply cannot replicate.

  • You plan to print. If you want a large, framed portrait for your hallway or a high-quality album for your coffee table, you need the detail and depth that professional gear provides.

I Carry the Weight So You Don’t Have To

When it is my job to document your story, I happily hike with all my gear. I handle the heavy lifting, the technical lighting, and the "work" of the session so you don't have to.

My goal is to give you a tailored process where you can show up, relax, and simply focus on your baby. You get the high-end, polished results that are ready to be preserved for a lifetime, without having to worry about a single technical detail.

Whether you need a quick phone snap of a hike or a professionally curated session in my studio, the most important thing is that you are documenting the journey. If you’re ready to step into the frame and let me handle the heavy lifting for you, click here to start planning your session.
